Bring out the carrier early
Put their carrier or crate somewhere they hang out, door open, with a blanket inside. Drop in a treat now and then. By ride day it’s just another comfy spot, not a warning sign.
Try a tiny test drive
For dogs, a short loop around the block in their crate or harness, then home for a treat. For cats, close the carrier door for a minute while they’re relaxed, then open it again. Small, boring, successful.
Pack the bag the night before
Lead and harness or carrier, a blanket from home, a few treats, labeled food if they’re staying somewhere, and a page of notes. Put it by the door so the morning stays calm.
Keep the morning chill
A short walk for dogs, a quiet room for cats. Put cats in their carrier before we arrive, with the door closed, so nobody ends up chasing anyone under the bed.
Say goodbye like it’s Tuesday
A quick, cheerful goodbye works best. Pets read the room, so if you’re relaxed, they’re more likely to be too.
